Passage Level:
This reading passage test is specifically designed for advanced beginners to intermediate level Arabic learners. Because reading proficiency level classifications vary by country and region, this Modern Standard Arabic text could be suitable for advanced beginners or intermediate students depending on your background. Generally, if you can understand 70 to 80 percent of the passage without consulting a dictionary, then this is the perfect challenge for you. This concept is known as comprehensible input. If you can grasp everything easily, this might be a bit too easy for you, but it remains excellent maintenance practice regardless.
If you live in the US and are familiar with the ILR scale, then this passage would rate as L2 to L2+.
Reading Tips:
- Punctuation in authentic Arabic passages is not as strict as in Western languages. If you are at a loss, find the main clause, then determine the secondary clauses in a long sentence or paragraph.
- Use what you know to deduce what you don’t know. Look for clues and use your general knowledge and the context to figure out meaning.
- If you don’t understand a word, try to reduce it to its root (often three consonants). Then, try to figure out the general meaning of the root letters. Mastering the [[LINK:arabic-root-words]]Arabic root system[[/LINK]] is crucial for this strategy.
- Read the passage more than once before you answer the comprehension questions to ensure full context awareness.

The Reading Passage:
بدأ في بريطانيا أمس «أوكازيون القرن»! فقد شوهدت طوابير طويلة تصطف أمام سلاسل متاجر الثياب واللوازم الشخصية والمنزلية التي فتحت أبوابها مجدداً أمس (الإثنين)، بعد إغلاق استمر منذ مارس الماضي.
وتبدو المتاجر الكبيرة متلهفة للتخلص من مخزونها من البضائع، الذي تراكم جرّاء الإغلاق، بما قد تصل قيمته إلى 15 ملياراً من الجنيهات الإسترلينية. واضطر عدد من تلك المتاجر إلى فتح أبوابها قبل أكثر من ساعة من الموعد المعلن لفتح الأبواب، وذلك بسبب طول الطوابير التي اصطفت أمامها على مدى مئات الأمتار. وعلى رغم ذلك، فإن مكتب الإحصاءات الوطنية الحكومي أعلن أن 64% من سكان إنجلترا لا يزالون يخشون مغادرة منازلهم لأي سبب. وقال 20% إنهم لن يزوروا أي متجر مطلقاً خلال الفترة القادمة. ونشرت المتاجر الكبرى إجراءات تشمل السير داخل المتجر باتجاه واحد، ومنح تنزيلات كبيرة في الأسعار، وتوفير مواد التطهير والتعقيم للمتسوقين. وقالت الحكومة البريطانية إنها تنوي خفض ضريبة القيمة المضافة لتحفيز السكان على ارتياد الأسواق. كما ستقوم بتعديل قانون يمنع ممارسة التجارة يوم الأحد كل أسبوع.
